Greek Letters in Biology & Medicine
Biology and medicine inherit Greek notation in nearly every subfield: biochemistry names structural motifs with α and β, pharmacology classifies receptors and drugs by Greek letters, neuroscience labels brain rhythms with five Greek letters, and clinical medicine talks about α-blockers, β-thalassemia, and gamma globulin. This guide collects the most-used letters, organized by what kind of thing they label.
Protein Structure: Alpha Helix & Beta Sheet
The two foundational secondary-structure motifs of proteins are named after Greek letters. Linus Pauling proposed both in 1951 — the alpha helix appears in haemoglobin, keratin, and most globular proteins; the beta sheet appears in silk, antibodies, and amyloid fibrils.
- α-helix: A right-handed coil with 3.6 amino acid residues per turn, stabilized by hydrogen bonds between residues four apart (i and i+4). Found in myoglobin (~75% α-helix) and the leucine-zipper motif of transcription factors.
- β-sheet: Extended strands lined up side-by-side, hydrogen-bonded into a pleated sheet. Parallel β-sheets have strands running the same direction; antiparallel sheets run opposite — antiparallel sheets are slightly more stable.
- β-turn: A short loop reversing the protein chain's direction in four residues. Common at protein surfaces.
- 310-helix and π-helix: Two less common helical variants, named not for Greek letters but for the geometry (3.0 residues/turn or 4.4 residues/turn).
- α/β proteins: A broad protein-fold class where α-helices and β-sheets alternate (the famous TIM barrel is the most common example).
Misfolded β-sheets that aggregate into amyloid fibrils are central to neurodegenerative diseases including Alzheimer's (β-amyloid plaques), Parkinson's (α-synuclein), and type 2 diabetes (amyloid in pancreatic islets).
Alpha, Beta, Gamma Globulins
Serum proteins separate into bands on an electrophoresis gel, named for their mobility:
- α1-globulins: Include α1-antitrypsin (protects lungs from elastase damage), α-fetoprotein (a fetal protein; elevated levels can indicate certain cancers or pregnancy complications).
- α2-globulins: Include haptoglobin (binds free hemoglobin) and ceruloplasmin (carries copper).
- β-globulins: Include transferrin (iron transport), β-lipoprotein (LDL cholesterol), complement components.
- γ-globulins: Largely immunoglobulins (antibodies) — IgG, IgM, IgA, IgD, IgE. Hence "gamma globulin therapy" for immunodeficiency or post-exposure prophylaxis.
Alpha and Beta Receptors
Two major receptor families take Greek-letter names; both are central to pharmacology.
Adrenergic Receptors
The "fight or flight" system uses α and β receptors, originally classified by their response to adrenaline (epinephrine) versus noradrenaline (norepinephrine). Today they have five well-known subtypes:
- α1: Vascular smooth-muscle constriction. Blockers (prazosin, tamsulosin) treat hypertension and benign prostatic hyperplasia.
- α2: Presynaptic; reduces noradrenaline release. Agonists (clonidine) treat hypertension and ADHD.
- β1: Cardiac muscle. Blockers (metoprolol, atenolol) slow the heart in hypertension, angina, and arrhythmias.
- β2: Bronchial smooth muscle. Agonists (salbutamol/albuterol) open airways in asthma.
- β3: Adipose tissue and bladder. Agonists (mirabegron) treat overactive bladder.
GABA Receptors
- GABAA: Ligand-gated chloride channel; the binding site of benzodiazepines (diazepam, alprazolam) and barbiturates.
- GABAB: G-protein-coupled; baclofen acts here as a muscle relaxant.
Brain Waves: Alpha, Beta, Gamma, Delta, Theta
EEG (electroencephalography) classifies brain electrical activity into five frequency bands, each named for a Greek letter:

Some clinicians also distinguish high beta (20–30 Hz, anxious thought) from low beta (13–20 Hz, attentive but calm). Gamma activity has been studied in connection with consciousness, memory binding, and meditation.
Omega-3, Omega-6 Fatty Acids
Polyunsaturated fatty acids are classified by the position of the first double bond counted from the methyl (omega) end. The omega end is the last carbon in the chain, hence the name from the last letter of the Greek alphabet.
- ω-3 fatty acids: First double bond at the 3rd carbon from the omega end. EPA and DHA (in fish oil), ALA (in flax and chia). Linked to cardiovascular and cognitive health.
- ω-6 fatty acids: First double bond at the 6th carbon. Linoleic acid (in seed oils), arachidonic acid (precursor to inflammatory eicosanoids).
- ω-9 fatty acids: Oleic acid (in olive oil). Monounsaturated; the body can make these so they're not essential.
- Essential fatty acids: ω-3 and ω-6 are essential because humans lack the enzymes to introduce double bonds beyond carbon 9 from the carboxyl end.
- The 3:6 ratio: Modern Western diets are heavily skewed toward ω-6 (~16:1 vs. an evolutionary 1:1 or 2:1); some research suggests this imbalance promotes inflammation.
Alpha and Beta Thalassemia
Thalassemias are inherited blood disorders caused by reduced production of one of hemoglobin's globin chains. Adult hemoglobin (HbA) consists of two α and two β chains; deficiency in either causes a distinct disease.
- α-thalassemia: Reduced α-globin production. Severity depends on how many of the four α-globin genes are affected (1 = silent carrier; 4 = lethal in utero, "hydrops fetalis").
- β-thalassemia: Reduced β-globin. β-thalassemia major (Cooley's anemia) requires lifelong blood transfusions.
- Sickle-cell anemia: A point mutation in β-globin (Glu→Val at position 6) — technically a "hemoglobinopathy" rather than a thalassemia, but related.
Beta-hCG and Hormone Subunits
Several glycoprotein hormones share a common α subunit but have distinct β subunits that determine biological identity. β-hCG measurement is the basis of pregnancy testing.
- hCG (human chorionic gonadotropin): Detected in pregnancy tests by measuring its β subunit; α is shared with LH, FSH, TSH and would cross-react.
- LH and FSH (luteinizing and follicle-stimulating hormone): Pituitary gonadotropins, also α/β heterodimers.
- TSH (thyroid-stimulating hormone): Same α/β architecture; specific β subunit drives thyroid action.
- Beta-hCG doubling time: In early pregnancy, β-hCG roughly doubles every 48–72 hours; slower doubling can indicate ectopic pregnancy or impending miscarriage.
TNF-α, IL-1β, IFN-γ — The Cytokines
Cytokines — small signaling proteins of the immune system — are often named with Greek-letter suffixes denoting different forms:
- TNF-α (tumor necrosis factor alpha): Major inflammation mediator. TNF inhibitors (infliximab, adalimumab, etanercept) are foundational drugs for rheumatoid arthritis and Crohn's disease.
- IL-1β (interleukin-1 beta): Drives fever and inflammation. Inhibited by anakinra.
- IFN-α, IFN-β, IFN-γ (interferons): Type I (α, β) trigger antiviral state; Type II (γ) activates macrophages and is central to anti-mycobacterial defense.
- TGF-β (transforming growth factor beta): Master regulator of fibrosis and cellular differentiation.
- NF-κB (nuclear factor kappa-B): Transcription factor controlling inflammation and immunity — named for the kappa light-chain gene region it was first identified at.
Other Greek Letters in Medicine
- α1-antitrypsin deficiency: Inherited disorder causing early-onset emphysema.
- 5α-reductase: Enzyme converting testosterone to the more potent dihydrotestosterone (DHT). Inhibitors (finasteride) treat male-pattern baldness and benign prostatic hyperplasia.
- 17β-estradiol: The most potent natural estrogen; the "17β" refers to its stereochemistry at carbon 17.
- 17α-hydroxyprogesterone: Diagnostic marker for congenital adrenal hyperplasia.
- γ-aminobutyric acid (GABA): Primary inhibitory neurotransmitter in the CNS.
- μ-opioid receptor (MOR): The receptor target of morphine and most clinically important opioids. δ-opioid and κ-opioid receptors are related subtypes.
- γ-glutamyl transferase (GGT): Liver enzyme elevated in cholestasis and alcohol use.
- SARS-CoV-2 variants: The WHO labels variants of concern with Greek letters: Alpha, Beta, Gamma, Delta, Omicron (skipping Nu and Xi for naming reasons).
Ecology and Evolutionary Biology
- α-diversity: Species diversity within a single habitat.
- β-diversity: Difference in diversity between habitats.
- γ-diversity: Total diversity across a region (= α × β in Whittaker's formulation).
- r and K selection: (Not Greek, but related taxonomy.) Quick-reproducing "r-strategists" vs. slow, long-lived "K-strategists."
- FST and π (genetic diversity): π is the average number of nucleotide differences per site between sequences in a population.
